Did you know there are certain things that should not be placed in your trash because their potential to cause environmental damage? The US Environmental Agency sets the federal guidelines for operating the solid waste landfills. Then states can determine if the guidelines need to be more strict. Here is our top four things you should never put in your trash.
- Car Batteries. These batteries tend to be lead-acid batteries and are harmful if they leak or spill. Instead of placing them in the landfill, you can exchange your old one for a new one at an auto service center.
- Used tires. In addition to posing a fire risk in landfills, they also tend to hold water inviting disease carrying insects. Trade them in when you purchase new tires. They can often be recycled to create rubber-modified asphalt, landscaping mulch and much more.
- Large appliances. They may contain components that are harmful for the environment like mercury switches, freon and more. If the appliance still works, donate it. If not, ask the retailer to recycle it when they deliver your new one.
- Aluminum cans. It has an endless recyclability and that’s why 75% of the aluminum ever produced is still in use!
So before you throw anything away, consider recycling or donating to get more use out of the product.
